I would like to see a common interface that all hardware decoders can use as long as situation like I mentioned is covered. I can imagine the decoding done in the core if a hardware reference is returned and then the UI can make use of the reference. I even think the multimedia redirection should do the same thing. The events sent to the UI can include a hardware reference that the UI can blit to the screen.
Another note, Vic mentioned refactoring the software decoding to multi thread. This is a good idea and hardware decoding should be including in the refactoring.
