In case you haven't decided on how to store the results yet, I'd recommend
storing a string of General MIDI commands for each instrument- this should
be sufficiently generic.

I think that kmid (The KDE /dev/sequencer MIDI player) has one, but it
appears to be compiled in (and I don't have the sources at hand right
now).

The last time I searched for it (late summer, IIRC), I didn't find any.
DSP sound effects appear not to be compressed, though (catting them to
/dev/dsp sounds approximately right).
