Actually, I'm not really certain either. Still, using _both_
AM_PROG_LIBTOOL and AC_PROG_LIBTOOL appears to silence similar problems on
my box- let's try it again with that setup.

Now this is ancient. autoconf 2.50 has been available for at least 42
minutes now...
