Also note that I have been unable to reproduce it or even to come up with
a matching conspiration theory to explain it...

Something in the way the savegames are written is completely broken. Might
be some sort of heap/stack corruption, Win32 kernel bugs, or sunspots.
The most reasonable way to investigate this would be to add an option to
re-read a savegame after writing it to check wether it matches the memory
contents.
