Hmm.  I wasn't aware of that.

Unfortunately, I've since replaced my just-out-of-warranty laptop with a
slightly newer one, and for some reason ALSA doesn't like its sound
chip, even though it's suppoed to be supported fine.

My initial plan is to have it dumping audio output to a file.  That way
we don't have to worry about oss/alsa/dsound/sacrficedchickens output
problems..
