Yep, we tracked it down to the originating pbx ( a cisco call manager) which 
had a 12 hour limit on outbound calls, thanks for your help.

This would make sense. Some systems will have a hard limit on the length of a 
call and will disconnect automatically because they interpret a 12 hour call as 
a "problem" and the "solution" is to hang up.
