David Rowe has recently implemented the codec for Asterisk (in svn)Caveat that you need to fiddle a bit with the config to force a double encoding in the middle you can then use normal (non codec2) endpoints through the asterisk box and hear the effect of codec2 in the middle
Or was your question about optimising the code to run on small processors with short delay?
