Joe Taylor, K1JT has revolutionized the field of low S/N ratio, narrow band text modes with his WSJT/WSPR modes (now the cornerstone of Moon Bounce).
Remember what David said about meeting the best people because he's doing this work? Joe shared the 1993 Nobel Prize in physics, for discovering a new kind of pulsar.

Yes, we buy manufactured radios, but at least we understand how they work and we can home-brew interoperable equipment if we have a need to do so. Closed modems and codecs are fundamentally different from that.

The brain trust that are active in actually making /widely-distributed/ complex DSP projects for Amateur Radio is probably no more than 100 people. That we know them all says as much. A lot of people hack on DSP but never come out with a product like WSJT/WSPR.

Hopefully, David's work will motivate more of them.

    Thanks
