For example if the rest of the HAM-iverse is using 10KHz channel spacing, why would we limit our codec/modem to a 2KHz channel.
If the local frequency coordinator allocated us a 10 KHz channel, and we were capable of 2 KHz channels, we would have 5 channels.

Here in Northern California, we have lost much of the repeater use of the 440 MHz band due to PAVE PAWS. Frequency coordination hasn't been easy here for decades. 2 KHz channels would be a desirable feature.

The most recent Celluar Industry conference was a non-stop commercial for FCC to allocate them more frequencies from start to finish of the conference. People said it played like an infomercial. We potentially have some problems coming up.
Would 'purpose built' be from the ground up, or as a module
I think from the ground up. Newer ICOM radios have the codec on the motherboard, we can't really count on current commercial radios as a platform for codec experimentation.

TAPR did a pretty good job at getting very many manufacturers to use AX.25 on 1200 and 9600 modems interoperably. Bob Bruninga and TAPR did a good job at getting many manufacturers to use APRS interoperably. We can innovate here, and pave the way for adoption by mainstream manufacturers.

    Thanks
