I want to show you an example of what can go wrong, to introduce why I think we should register some trademarks.

If you look at 7zip.com, that is the main site that Microsoft Windows will direct you to if you can't decode a zip file.

7zip.com doesn't belong to the Open Source project that makes 7zip, though. That's 7zip.org .

Instead, 7zip.com belongs to some unsavory folks who, when you download 7zip from there, will also modify your Windows installer. From that point on, the Windows installer will show ads that make them revenue while it's running.

Obviously it's difficult to both be Open Source /and /control this abuse. A trademark is one of the fundamental tools, because it allows you to make sure your name is under your control and is used for the official version rather than some dirtbag's nastyware.

I think it's time for us to register both Codec2 and FreeDV.
