Yes, like a bad penny I'm going to resurface with this... ;-) I've been massively busy with other projects, but have been lurking on the list and it's fantastic that Codec2 is breaking through into the lime-light now with the 'FreeDV.org' app.
Ages ago 'we' spent a fair effort looking how DTMF signalling tones could be added into the protocol. If memory serves me correct we figured that Codec wouldn't be able to encode them as normal audio, and that the best approach would be to mark some frames as 'non-audio' and to have some bits allocated in the non-voiced frame format to signal them. I had a look through the Codec2/FDMV source and couldn't see where the format for non-voiced frames was defined (although it was very late so I might have easily missed it ;-). Did anyone already cover this, or is this not really required? Personally I think this would be useful; along with (possibly) including some format of arbetory text stream (ie. similar to low rate data of D-Star).
