Scott, Kristoff, David,

I certainly don't want to dissuade anyone from doing a fixed-point
implementation of the codec.

But I feel that I should point out that floating point DSP's are a lot
commoner and cheaper than they once were. For example the TI OMAP
and perhaps Sitara lines provide programmable floating point DSP
cores. They also provide free (if not Open Source) but time-limited
tools for this purpose. This includes the chips on the BeagleBoard
and Panda board, among others. But not the Beaglebone. Other
companies have competitive offerings.

Still, a reasonably portable fixed-point implementation would be much
more valuable in general.
