David, radios like the softrock have no narrow filters at all, and they work excellently with SDR. What you know from using CW and SSB is just wrong for this mode, and for SSTV, and you should not worry about your filters. Turn them, and your AGC, off. Your FT-950 is just fine for this mode.

You heard some interference. It may even be that somebody was overdriving their radio, or it may be that it was one of the zillions of other operators on the band using ssb. It has nothing to do with your filters.
Next time I run into this situation, I'll narrow down the filters as best as I can to minimize any adjacent interference and see if it works well enough.
Filters are just for ears, not for SSTV. Turn the filters off and let your SSTV demodulator discriminate between the signals it's supposed to demodulate and those it isn't.
