Hi everyone – I would second this, as I’d also be interested in
understanding the mechanics of the codec better, and currently having to
fight my way through C source code is making this more difficult than it
needs to be (I’ve only done a smattering of Visual C#, and I’m much happier
in Assembler!).

In particular, such a “white-paper”-style description would make it easier
to get to a non-floating-point implementation, as it would be easier to see
the potential range of each of the intermediate products in the algorithm,
which is the biggest challenge.

Could David knock-up a “back-of-an-envelope” high-level description?
