Yaesu's digital radios uses C4FM FDMA modulation and Icom's D-STAR radios use
GMSK modulation.
Icom's D-STAR radios use the AMBE vocoder and I understand Yaesu's radios use
AMBE+2 vocoder.
Both vocoders AMBE & AMBE+2 are patented by DVSI, however AMBE ICs are around
$20 in small quantities and
can be used by anyone.
For example, the DV Dongle which allows the D-STAR network to be accessed from
a PC uses the AMBE vocoder.
AMBE+2 is currently used by many commercial systems including NXDN, MOTOTRBO &
P25 Phase II (Phase I uses IMBE).

I had the impression that Yaesu was using a different proprietary
protocol than ICOM, but proprietary nonetheless.
But, your posting the annoucements here makes me wonder if I was
mistaken. Are there protocol specs available, which an amateur could
implement?
