So, I've been dealing with QRM so that I can actually hear FreeDV well
enough to test the software I'm working on. I walked around the house
yesterday with the KX3 and the Alex Loop and convinced myself that the
issues were in my own house, but didn't really find all of them.

I got an MFJ-856
?(http://www.mfjenterprises.com/Product.php?productid=MFJ-856) today and
started sweeping around. Many of you would homebrew such a thing, but at
the moment my time is more valuable than what I paid for it.

FYI, it works really well and I would recommend it to anyone else who is
dealing with such issues. It works at 135 MHz which is often quiet (I do
hear pilots once in a while) and surprisingly the noise sources get that
high frequency in their near field. I really quickly found the bad
florescent lamp, the laptop power supply, and the battery chargers. Also
noticed that my entire wired network has a continuous hiss coming off it
even though all of the wires are shielded. I'll work on its grounds and
adding chokes, etc.

I'll use the AM radio with loopstick and make sure I'm getting the
entire low end, too.

     Thanks

     Bruce
