Mostly I'm interested in a FreeBSD port because I use FreeBSD for my desktop. While I can run Windows programs in Wine or Linux programs with a Linuxulator, I'm not really willing to do that with my hobby... I need to write, port, or do without. In general, it's not overly hard to port from Linux, so the first place I look tends to be for open source Linux software. For a DIY type technical hobby historically based on collaborating and sharing ideas, I'm constantly struck by how little open source there is supporting the hobby.
