Rather than low pin-count chip, a low pin-count board may be more
economical to manufacture.

That is, A/D<->DSP<->D/A configured for full-duplex, with just the audio
and control signals brought out to the board edge.

I think the current thinking is a more general purpose CPU with hardware FP
(cheap but bulky).  After all, it's only 3 kHz audio.
