A couple of weeks ago I ran into problems with audio processing on my Linux
box. I am using a very recent Mint distribution and the Cinnamon desktop.
Mint sits on top of a mostly Ubuntu environment, and it had been working
well.

Suddenly nothing 'audio' worked at all. I keep my systems pretty up to
date, and it appeared that a kernel update re-awoke some sleeping monsters
that were doing real violence to any kind of audio processing. I do not
remember the kernel revision I was using, but after some reading it
appeared that this was a pervasive problem that could be rectified by using
a different release.

I no longer remember the specific reasons that I chose my current kernel
(Ubuntu 3.13.0-33.58-lowlatency 3.13.11.4), but it fixed my problems very
satisfactorily.
