A little off topic, but some here might be interested in this presentation
from the recent '31C3: Chaos Computer Congress' conference.

osmo-gmr: What's up with sat-phones ?
Piecing together the missing bits

At 28C3 we introduced the very first steps of the osmo-gmr projects.
During this talk, we will present the various advances that have been made
in this project on various aspects (voice codec, crypto algorithm, ...)

>From previous work on DStar we know that the AMBE chip is just a TI DSP
with the protect bit(s) blown, these guys (perhaps unaware of DStar)
noticed that the same codec was used on the Satellite phone they were
reversing...

The real interesting bit starts around 16min mark; when they describe
grabbing the DSP code from a firmware update, analysing it in IDE and
relocating binary to run on their dev board.

Cheers,
Simon.

PS. There are usually a whole load of interesting talks coming from this
conference.
