Well, it is a lossy compression :-) Wouldn't it be neat if there was a
lossless compression of the same ratio?

The vocoder looks at the stream of PCM audio in 10 ms segments. There
is a lot of processing that goes on to encode/decode each 20 or 40 ms
chunk, but I don't think any state (the voice models) are retained.
It's job is to produce a compressed digital representation, or a PCM
representation of the digital.

I guess the answer is, that the analysis is not retained, as it is no
longer needed.
