Algoram's radio is decidedly not minimal and is in intended for 
land-mobile operation as well as Amateur. It supports essentially 
everything you'd want to try on 50-1000 MHz including spread spectrum, 
and thus it's not minimal. But it's suitable hardware for a whole decade 
of Amateur software development. The second generation is a working 
transceiver and the third generation is currently in PCB fabrication. 
The assembler has ordered parts. Turn on should be in a few weeks.

There is definitely room for minimal implementations.
