Nice catch Michael and thanks for your feedback!  Yes I tested with 
stereo 3.5mm connector.  Any suggestions on how we should wire the 
socket to suit both stereo and mono connectors?

I guess if we connect stereo powered speakers we would like both 
channels to be driven.
