Stuart, I believe you have selected a good mic for FreeDV. Gerry N4DV has excellent audio from his vehicle using a "mobile phone" HS mic. A little modification on the connector and that was it. And yes, most importanat and somewhat mic dependent is the windsock. Some speech and breathing can cause a frequent and annoying "grunt" sound... similar to a pig in a troft looking for that last gulp.
