thank you so much for input.
I am very grateful that you took the trouble of attempting the builds
yourselves.

I have managed to complete the static build of wxwidgets. That runs and
completes with only me having to alter line 108 in the wxwidgets.dir in
CMakefiles.

The error I told you about happens right after portaudio and all the other
3rd party software have been built.

Thanks again for your help.
Just to put you in perspective I have spent the best of three days working
on this.

I have been running combinations of CMake commands, and altering ./config
commands to enable cross compilation. I'm really new at this so pardon if
some things are obvious and I'm not seeing them.

I made a fresh installation of ubuntu 16.04 to remove any rookie mistakes I
made earlier. I ran all the commands to the letter yesterday on the VM and
still nothing.

I'm very grateful and thankful for your help.
