Richard - I think you have made a fine choice is sticking with the
stm32f4.  It makes the project manageable for you, as you recent
progress has shown.

Glen - the optimisation for 700D has already been done by Don.  No sign
of any CPU limit.  I had the same experience when I ported FreeDV 1600
to the stm32f4.

A more modern stm32 variant is a "nice to have", but by no means
essential.
