1. Simply finding someone else to talk to. That's one of the reasons why the quarterly Activity Days started up. Of course, there is room to improve how those are held, and I'd definitely appreciate any feedback in that regard. 2. Ease of configuration/use as FreeDV's use of two sound cards is unusual for ham radio applications. There are ongoing efforts to improve that, but code contributions towards that goal are welcome. As for whether it's better than SSB, there was some controlled testing last year and the conclusion is more like "it depends". More info is at http://www.rowetel.com/?p=7779 if curious.
