Hi,

The ETSI standard TS 102 361-1 does not specify any particular vocoder for 
DMR, it's up to manufacturers to choose one, and I think AMBE was the 
solution that was converged upon by everyone. I believe there are some 
vendors which do provide alternative vocoders for their DMR transceivers. 
One of them is Hytera.

But otherwise there is no restriction in the standard as to what the audio 
payload should be. There are only some technical and practical 
considerations, such as the availability of a dedicated chip in order to meet 
the stringent power budget of handheld terminals.
