If you are interested in a newsletter, I just integrated 452 Multi-MAIL into
ft1.3. The coding is similar to ft in the way the functions are abstracted
and the security wraps the code so integration is pretty smooth. It also
avoids the php mail function and so is purportedly faster.

Haven't gone live with it yet so can't vouch for the stability :(

35,000 records is nothing. You should use one table.
Having said that, if you're stuck on using separate table for political
reasons, consider a merge table. This is a virtual table that treats a
group of tables as one for reads. You can read about it in the MySQL
manual.
