Just a few thoughts concerning uploading images: Can I suggest anyone interested have a look at http://www.midicart.com and check out Miva Merchant (www.miva.com) for the pop-up upload window...It's the method I've intended to implement as it sorts out a few issues with toggling an input type text/file field for the graphics.
However an issue that has me holding back is the fact that in a site even with as few as 100 products (which equals 300 item images) there needs to be a way of organising those images into separate directories. From my experience of a client using upload image in Miva Merchant they ended up with an unmanageable directory full of thousands of images (including errors). Oh and you may be interested in comparing Kent's implementation to one done previously by Ron Dyck...
