Well, some time has passed, and freetype-2.1.10 was released.
I've just verified your bugfix for (some) PowerPC systems where
an aliasing problem in FT_Get_Name_Index have lead to an
Illegal Instruction when processing Type1 fonts with mkfontscale.
Here, is my build log:
cd ~/newbuild
tar xjvf freetype-2.6.10.tar.bz2
cd freetype-2.6.10
./configure --prefix=/usr
make
su -
make install
ldconfig
exit
cd ~/newbuild/xc/programs/mkfontscale
make clean
make
cp ../../Fonts/scale/Type1 . -r
./mkfontscale Type1
less Type1/fonts.scale

mkfontscale is working fine now with the new freetype libs.
So, this issue should be solved now.
