Well, I've been doing all of my testing with local packages of 2.2rc4, based on the existing Debian packages; unless 2.2rc4 includes changes to how the bytecode interpreter is enabled, the patch used for previous versions ought to still be having the intended effect. You're welcome to have a look at these packages at <http://people.debian.org/~vorlon/freetype/>, to confirm whether it is a bytecode interpreter issue.
