After re-reading the message from quanta, and your response to it, I
see what you mean about needing a separate library to do this stuff.
I'm envisioning something that would get the outline from freetype, and
handle the rasterization, AA, filtering, etc. and return back to the
client. That would solve both the issues that quanta brings up, as well
as the ones I'm bringing up.
Could call it Freerender? ;)

Ideally, the ideas laid out in this message should be handled
similarly, this, using hooks and/or separate modules, probably even in
a separate library.
