Ah, yes, I've missed this.

Exactly. The bytecode in the fonts are active for B/W hinting only
(and thus disabled for grayscale rendering). Depending on the
browser, you either get no hinting (e.g. Firefox), or auto-hinting
(e.g. Chrome).
If auto-hinting is active, you get different results because of the
limited set of glyphs in `Mercury SSm B': it doesn't contain the
necessary characters to compute all blue zones for Latin.
