That image by Dave Arnold is an outstanding demonstration why gamma
correction is necessary on sRGB monitors. I could not help but show
this on a different scale, see attached. My recent favorite test is
this:

ftview -r 96 -w 640 -h 640 -f 58 312 verdanai.ttf

Notice how gamma correction helps to remove "waving" of near vertical lines.
