:) I think that handling of tricky fonts should stay as-is in
FreeType.  Today, almost all fonts avoid overlapping contours for
various reasons, and I'm not aware of recently created tricky fonts.

On the other hand, I think it wouldn't be too hard to recognize tricky
fonts on the fonttool side (e.g., comparing point coordinates before
and after bytecode hinting) so that the bytecode optimizer could emit
a warning.
