BTW, you never mentioned what version of freetype you are using for testing.

FontVal 2.0 has a backend based on Freetype 2.6.4. The backend is used for
analysing hdmx/ltsh/vdmx tables as well as hinting instructions, but the rest
is independent and may tell you other things about flaws in the font. While it
is not the latest, it may be more recent than yours. windows build and mac
build:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/hp-pxl-jetready/files/Microsoft%20Font%20Validator/FontVal-2.0.0-py.dmg

The latest pub dev is based on 2.7.0 and at
https://github.com/HinTak/Font-Validator
if you can build from source; grabbing and just replacing the windows dlls from
https://github.com/HinTak/Font-Validator/tree/master/bin/ to update the 2.0
release should work too. There is no plan to update the pub dev beyond that, as
the latest private dev has some interface change which affects the rest of
FontVal. I don't want to go backward just to build a more up-to-date backend.

I have never managed to download from the qq.com urls - it is either cookie
error with batch download tool or file not found with firefox/icecat. So
dropbox or whatever is probably preferred. (or even pan.baidu). OTOH,
https://github.com/HinTak/Font-Validator/issues/ allows you to upload test file
attachments - I don't know of the size limit - as long as you have a github id.

One day I'd like to figure out the qq.com failure.

Subject: [ft-devel] FreeType cannot open face 0 for this
 font
 Message-ID: <[email protected]>
 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="gb18030"

 Hello, team!

FreeType cannot open face 0 for this font, error 8 is
returned, but face -1 is fine. Both FontForge, Windows font
viewer and Mac font viewer open the font successfully
without warning. although Fontforge prompts a warning saying
"Font file has bad glyph count field. maxp says 65535
sizeof(loca)=>78419", but the glyphs are viewable. I am
not sure whether the warning has something to do with
FreeType's failure to open the font. Please check it.

 Thank you!
