Can such a feature be provided with animated GIFs? Looking around it seems that sprite PNGs are an alternative to animated GIFS, where the various sub-images are accessed with JavaScript or CSS (cf. property `background-position'): https://css-tricks.com/css-sprites/ (and look at the `further reading' section on this page). Have the sub-images side by side horizontally would automatically provide one of the modes suggested by Arvinder...
