That’s the job of a layout engine
(freetype is not a layout engine – it is a glyph rendering engine). You need to
use a layout engine like pango, uniscribe or maybe ICU to get the information
as to how the glyphs should change in context. Ian From:

tried to use freetype to display English, Thai, Chinese,etc.. It dose work
wonderful.but when I try to display Arabic, there is a problem: the characters
don't change with the different adjacent characters. How to solve this problem? thanks,
