I've recently upgraded my OS. The previous release used XFree86 4.4.0 RC2 (freetype 2.1.4), the new release uses X.org 6.8.1 (freetype 2.1.8). I recompiled X with changed xc/extras/freetype2/include/freetype/config/ftoption.h
#define TT_CONFIG_OPTION_BYTECODE_INTERPRETER
It always worked perfectly fine.
This time however, some characters (glyphs) are distorted at certain
font sizes or types.
I tried recompiling with
#undef TT_CONFIG_OPTION_UNPATENTED_HINTING
with the same results.
See the first attachment with Microsoft Georgia bold (it seems to happen
at any size, regular and italic are OK).
Notice the distortion of the letter s.
See the second attachment for bold sans font from the Freetype web page
(seems to be Microsoft Verdana). It happens only at smaller font sizes.
Notice the smaller size of letter r. With Lucida Sans (from Java
distribution) it happens at size 12 even with regular font.
Finally the third attachment shows
xterm -fa "Lucida Sans Typewriter" -fs 12
Notice the smaller size of w, x, v, and z characters.
Any idea why this happens, and how it can be fixed?
Best regards,
Zvezdan Petkovic
