Couldn't you just use one of the X11 based viewing apps that come with FreeType? I'm not sure how it all works on Windows, but on Mac OS X you can just run the sample apps from the X terminal and see what the text looks like. Since you point the apps at the font file, there is no need to install them, or even run them under Linux.
