BTW, why are you using version 2.3.9?
I did the following within an arbitrary directory:
1. unpack freetype-2.3.11.tar.bz2
2. unpack ft2demos-2.3.11.tar.bz2
3. ln -s freetype-2.3.11 freetype2
4. cd freetype2
5. ./configure
5. make
6. cd ../ft2demos-2.3.11
7. make
You need GNU make 3.81; maybe you have a too old version.
