Freetype used to increase the advance by 2x the emboldening strength, which was too much. Now it is 1x, which is by how much the width of 'I' would increase. Like I said it is not like we mess up original advance. When people rely on Freetype to hint/embolden/slant glyphs, they should expect that we might improve things.
