There was a reason I added it, but it was around Python 2.3. Now it
looks like it is working as expected:
>>> >>> type('o' + u'o' 'o')
<type 'unicode'>
>>> >>> type('o%so' % u'o')
<type 'unicode'>
>>> >>> type(u'o%so' % 'o')
<type 'unicode'>
So I guess it is safe to remove this. Maybe we don't need to match
logging anymore either.
