There is no reason why you couldn't do this. Nothing is specific to playing files as far as I can tell. We'd just need a way to generate the bookmark file and read it. Other than the checksum, I can't think of anything that is guaranteed to be unique, across the various mpg, avi, ogm, etc. that mplayer can play.
