I'm sorry, I should be more clear. What I meant by heftier was not the size
of the list, but the assumption that each item in the list (of licenses)
would be as cheap as the MPEG-4 AAC license.

OTOH it seems possible (as someone posted) that that you may acquire the
codec licenses by choosing a card with the codecs implemented in hardware.
I'll look more into that.  

Anyway, I don't think that my general assumption that it is possible to
afford paying licenses for consumer products that are licensed with consumer
pricing in mind. The codecs are implemented in a wide range of (other)
consumer devices and that comparably greater consumer base should be
reflected in the pricing (And indeed is, in the MPEG-4 AAC example).

Yes. If you use DVD: decss is illegal, ac3 has a copyright. Even mp3
is not without patents. And mplayer can play asf: bad. The quicktime
stuff is also not free from patents. I needed 5 secs to write this
list, there is more I guess.
