As Gustavo already mentioned, i am changing course on dvdbackup and am going (or at least trying) to make a EncodingServer. This will get rid of the cwd problems, and will allow people to encode things on a different computer then the one freevo is running on (very handy if the freevo box is a "slow" box like an epia, so u can keep loud powerfull pcs away from your living room).
...
What do u guys think?
Just like the record server, it is nice to be able to run it standalone. Then you can have it on a different computer, or if it is on the same computer it can run independently of the main Freevo app.
But I think most people have Freevo running continuously on one computer which is connected to the TV. It should be the default config that both the record server and things like the DVD backup plugin are available from just starting the main freevo app.
If so, maybe we need to extend the Freevo shutdown to ask which parts of Freevo are to be shutdown (all, or selected pieces (main, record server, www, CD backup, DVD backup, etc)).
Speaking of this, wouldn't it be useful to have the tv_grab function done from inside Freevo by default instead of using cron?

PS Check out freevo/contrib/examples/dvd_cropscale.py for some example code that tries to figure the crop and scale parameters for mencoder when backing up DVDs.
