Yeah, myth isn't really upto much ;P
This sounds good, but what happens to WMV DRM? You can't implement such things in open source and this is the main reason to support WMV at all.
The agreement between fluendo and microsoft seemed to be some kind of either source code or standard information which most likely includes DRM, realplayer i believe also includes the drm portion for playback from rhapsody. This code is not open source, it is provided as a compiled codec, they investigated how much it would cost to buy an infinite license for mp3, real and windows media, mp3 cost 50k, which they paid and gave away free mp3 to the world, real and wm were gonna cost hundreds of thousands a year so they decided it best to distribute linux licenses instead, along with gstreamer codecs, however pitfdll for gstreamer is looking much better in gst-0.10 so maybe there won't be any need for them.
They didn't mention how they were selling the codecs, only that they were which is a shame, I still don't know where to buy them from!> This is not however the commercial end of their endeavours, in fact > they will be offering these codecs at cost price acting more like a > go between than a reseller. OK, so when we use gstreamer, we can also use that. That is nice to know.
http://pygstdocs.berlios.de/To summarize: it looks nice but I think they have a long way to go. Some parts could be copied into Freevo, some ideas like gstreamer are needed for Freevo to be as nice as this. But even with the big delay we have, I think (hope) Freevo 2.0 will be out before that with all the features they have. So someone here who knows gstreamer?
there are docs, they seem pretty simple, and there are easy examples around too, it should be way easier to get gst working than xine.
