I get the same kind of endless CPU usage when I run "./freevo-epg channels|update|search" maybe they are related. This is the output after calling "./freevo-epg channels"; the command never finished and epg-0 log file is never populated but is created.

I don't see why playing a recording solves the problem. Can you look
at the network using ethereal (or wireshark as it is called now) to
see if anything is up? Having two apps using much CPU sounds like they
exchange too much information.

That should not happen, but it is unrelated.

First of all: timeout is bad. Second: why connect at this point. They
should already be connected. Very very strange. Again, please take a
look at the network monitor.
