True, however, the ISO standard dictates the encoding and decoding processes. The actual code base derived from the standard is protected under US or other copyright. Placing a patent on an intangible that could easily be accomplished via differing methods is like trying to say the only way to come up with "4" is via "2+2". Parallel development has NOT been taken into account by the US patent office where software is concerned.
To say it all another way: Software patents are stupid and pointless.
